Religious Trends
According to a just released study from Penguin books, two thirds of teenagers say they don’t believe in God. Listed as the most important parts of life for them are family, friends, money, music and - reality television.
Almost 60 percent of teens also said religion isn’t a positive force, but “has a negative influence on the world.”
The survey included teenagers from the ages 13 to 18, and the results were released as part of the marketing of the new novel from Kevin Brooks named “Killing God.,” which deals with a 15-year-old girl who isn’t certain about whether God exists or not.
Brooks said about the results of the survey that “Part of the reason that I wrote Killing God was that I wanted to explore the personal attitudes of young people today, especially those with troubled lives, towards organised religion and the traditional concept of God.
“How can the moralities of an ancient religion relate to the tragedies and disorders of today’s broken world? And why do some people turn to God for help while others take comfort in drugs and alcohol?
“These are just some of the questions I wanted to consider… And I wasn’t looking for answers.”
