Tech Trends | Dial-up Internet Access Making a Comeback?

tough economy allows dial up internet access to hold its own

Tech Trends

Like everything else during difficult economic times, things can turn on their heads, and in the case of accessing the Internet, cheap is back in, and the result is dial-up Internet access is holding its own.

What this means is it’ll take longer for Internet users to transfer to broadband access, as long as the economy remains in the dumps.

It’s funny to think of this when a large number of Internet users, specifically young ones, don’t even know what dial-up Internet access is; or at least never used it.

It’s amazing to me to see these companies which are considered dead, continue to be cash cows after so long. For example, EarthLink is sitting on $565.8 million in cash and marketable securities.

This will probably keep Time Warner from selling their AOL unit any time soon, as it’s performing better than its display ads.

Of course this is simply a delay of the inevitable, but it shows how long a former technology can keep making money, in the midst of seemingly being irrelevant.

Dial-up of course isn’t making a comeback, but its almost all profit, and so even as users end up going to broadband, it’ll continue to be profitable as long as people use it.
